The Aspen Tree
The aspen sat alone spring awaiting
Never, those small creatures hating
For if the woodpecker had not drilled so many holes
Or if he had not sat on the burrow of the vole
Surely the axes would have landed upon him
Maimed his trunk and left only roots
That would become home to moss and green shoots
Now his leaves had turned to gold
The aspen had lived long and was growing old
Bitter winter frost had left him weak
Standing tall and growing, under mountain peak
If he left, he'd go down in fire
Taken afar for the warmth you desire
But that sorry fate was not to be
Instead, he turned to paper, that magnificent tree
I'm sure this would be a lot more meaningful on paper. But just remember where all of your books come from. Trees are vital to human society. They bring color, life, oxygen to our communities, and they should be respected.
